Habitats

During our minibeast topic we looked at habitats. Here the children were making their own minibeast homes out of dough, junk materials and even natural materials!

Snails

Here the children helped collect some snails in a tank. We gave then some vegetation and stones, sticks etc. from their habitat. We also put in some pink sugar paper because we'd heard they would then make pink poo....!

Butterflies

The children really enjoyed watching the caterpillars grow! They became quite big before the children excitedly noticed that they had started to cocoon! Sadly most of them hatched as butterflies over the holidays but lots of the children enjoyed releasing them, especially when they landed on their hands!

We already knew that the children had excellent language and understanding around adding. To move the children forward, we created an adult-led activity that linked to their topic of minibeasts. The children cut and stuck down a number of bugs and then wrote the number sum to go with it. We plan on creating a nice display with the leaves and other minibeast work!

Here's a fab activity that we did last year. The children used different shaped pasta to make a life-cycle of a butterfly. It was actually quite a good independent activity with the added challenge of writing labels for the more able.

Frogs

We created some simple pictures and added text to allow the children to cut out, label and/or order the life cycle of a frog. You can download them in Word if you'd like to edit them yourself! Apologies for the drawings themselves - we wanted pictures for our own use, to avoid copyright problems, so we drew them ourselves - we're not exactly artists but you're welcome to use them if you like!
