Talk for writing

Talk for Writing

Talk for Writing is a teaching framework created by Pie Corbett and supported by Julia Strong. Our school adopted it to help teachers feel confident that they were delivering a vocabulary rich writing curriculum that had clear progression throughout the years. We generally do one story and a connected non-fiction piece each half term.

We use the trolls non-chronological report to teach the children about the structure of these non-fiction texts. The information (about trolls) isn't technically the important part, because we're trying to get children used to the 'rhythm' of non-chronological reports. The children learned the text with actions and were able to retell it. After this, we introduced a 'story map' and this strengthened the children's ability to retell the text and also their understanding of this kind of text.

To continue to engage the children, we created the Mythical Museum! The children will be introduced to the different 'exhibits' to give them more 'facts' that they can use to innovate the non-fiction text with.
